Each cottage has a wide verandah, an airy living room with comfortable sofas, fireplace, TV and dvd player, a fully equipped kitchen and one, two or three en-suite double bedrooms. Mealtimes are deliciously drawn-out affairs – lazy breakfasts on the patio of historic Belvidere House and light lunches by the pool. Dinner is served at Caroline’s bistro where country-style venison, seafood and vegetarian dishes are served with South African flair. The Bell, Knysna’s smallest pub, occupies the oldest building at Belvidere and offers snacks, seafood or burgers on the terrace or, in winter, by the warmth of a traditional wood-burning stove. There’s every reason to stay at Belvidere. Trouble is, there’s absolutely no reason to leave.
