Its farmland stretches to the Vette River bordering the town. The original owner of the farm Doornkraal was Hermanus Egbertus Steyn, a descendant of master builder Douw Gerbrandt Steyn, who in 1668 arrived from Leeuwarden in Friesland to build the Castle of Good Hope, which is today one of Cape Town’s main tourist attractions. In 1838, the Steyn family sold a portion of the farm Doornkraal to establish the village of Riversdale. The current owner, Professor Pieter Gerbrandt Steyn is a descendant of the Doornkraal Steyns. The De Doornkraal Historic Country House - Meintjes House, has been meticulously restored and luxuriously furnished while maintaining its historic character. MEINTJIES HOUSE: 3 Luxurious en-suite double/twin rooms (bath & shower) with private entrances, not only spacious but also equipped with safes, hairdryers, satellite TV, telephones, fans/heaters and tea & coffee facilities.
