GEORGE

what to do | where to stay | where to eat | services | home

George, surrounded by the Outeniqua Mountains, forests, rivers and prosperous farmlands, lies 420 km from Cape Town and 320 km from Port Elizabeth. This makes it the perfect stopover from which to explore the Garden Route. It is the heart of the Southern Cape and the main business centre of the Garden Route. With sophisticated road, air and rail links to all major centres in South Africa, it is a convenient base from which to explore the many attractions of the Garden Route.

Apart from being the main business centre for the Garden Route, it has created an image as a major tourist Mecca with its many attractions – two of the top ten golf courses in South Africa, beautiful mountains, forests, and the Indian Ocean on its doorstep.

While boasting with conference facilities, businesses, major shopping centres, transport and sporting facilities, it still manages to retain its small town and country atmosphere. The town is a major accommodation centre with a broad spectrum of facilities ranging from hotels, B&Bs, self catering and lodges.

It is located in the Cape Wildflower Floral Kingdom and has a Mediterranean type climate. The surrounding Outeniqua Mountains offer nature lovers pristine beauty with hikes and an abundance of trails, mountain walks and unspoilt indigenous forests. The Audrey Environmental Centre housing a prestigious botanical collection is located next to the Garden Route Botanical Garden and offers a Wild Flower Show during October.

One of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations offering around 10 courses, driving ranges and a world class golf academy. These include the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate, Oubaai Golf Estate and the George Golf Club.

It is the sixth oldest town in South Africa and has many historical landmarks to be visited. These include the Slave Tree, an ancient English Oak planted by Landdrost van Kervel, King Edward VII Library building and the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country. The Outeniqua Transport Museum houses replica of old stations, displays of locomotives, coaches etc.
