GOUDVELD INDIGENOUS FORESTS

Forestry offers the visitor a wide range of outdoor activities. This leaflet highlights only those in Goudveld Forest.

KRISJAN-SE-NEK PICNIC SITE

Situated alongside a spectacular, 800 year-old Outeniqua yellowwood, this grassy site makes the ideal spot to spend a quiet few hours. It is also the start and end point of the nine & three kilometre Homtini Cycle Route, Circles in the Forest & Dalene Mathee Memorial site.

JUBILEE CREEK PICNIC SITE

Probably the most beautiful picnic spot in the Knysna Indigenous forests. Located in two forest clearings, alongside a stream, this site is very popular with young families.

MILLWOOD PICNIC SITE

A grassy picnic area close to the site of the old Millwood Mining Town.

MATEROLLI

The only remaining building dating back to the Millwood village era. This has recently been converted to a Tearoom and Information centre.

MILLWOOD MINING WALK

Starting and ending at the Millwood Picnic Site, the route-marked walk covers a distance of 5.6 kilometres and can be comfortably walked within two hours. Wonderful views of the Millwood Nature Reserve can be had and the trail passes by a number of abandoned mining tunnels and shafts. Regrettably, virtually nothing remains of the village itself.

THE BENDIGO TUNNEL

Named after the famous Australian goldfields in Victoria, the Bendigo Tunnel is one of the most easily accessible relicts of Millwood. It forms part of the Millwood Mines Restoration Project.

CIRCLES IN THE FOREST

A three & a nine kilometre walk starting and ending at the Krisjan-se-Nek Picnic Site. A section of this track follows an old mining path along the bank of Forest Creek. Some delightful swimming holes make the walk perfect for a summer’s day.

THE JUBILEE CREEK WALK

A short section of the Outeniqua Hiking Trail doubles as an interesting walk along a path that the miners used over one hundred years ago. The path follows the creek for approximately one kilometre passing numerous reminders of the mining activities of the 1880’s.

THE HOMTINI CYCLE ROUTE

A nineteen kilometre, circular route starting and ending at Krisjan-se-Nek Picnic Site. The route traverses sections of indigenous forest, plantation and fynbos. A word of warning however, a steep, three kilometre section of the route climbs over 330 metres (1000 feet) and can be demanding on a warm day. A route for the fitter cyclist.

THE OUTENIQUA HIKING TRAIL

The fourth hut on the Outeniqua Hiking Trail named Millwood Hut is situated approximately half-way along the Outeniqua Hiking Trail. It lies very close to the heart of the Millwood goldfields, site of the first South African “gold-rush”.

BIG TREES

A giant Outeniqua yellowwood (Podocarpus falcatus) is to be seen at the Krisjan-se-Nek Picnic Site.
