HARTENBOS
The seaside resort of Hartenbos is situated next to the Mossel Bay industrial town of Voorbaai. The Hartenbos resort was started in 1936 by an organisation called the ATKV - Afrikaanse Taal en Kultuur Vereniging, (The Afrikaans Language and Culture Organisation) which was part of the old South African Railways. The resort lies on the banks of the Hartenbos river and is an extremely popular vacation spot, especially among South African visitors. This quiet seaside town becomes a bustling holiday destination during peak season, December to January, when about 100 000 visitors from the interior flock here to enjoy the sun-washed beaches, calm seas and Mediterranean climate. While boating and fishing are by far the most popular activities, Hartenbos offers visitors much to do. The beach front boasts a heated indoor pool, super tube, bowling green, tennis courts, amusement centre, conference facilities and a huge amphitheatre where festivals and festive activities take place. Colourful kiosks vending anything from delicious seafood to colourful clothing, line the main street during the holiday season. The beautiful and safe lagoon of the Hartenbos River lends itself to great family holiday sport such as swimming, surfing and canoeing. Whale, dolphin and seal watching are other attractions that draw tourists from far and wide to Hartenbos each year. There is also an abundance of birdlife, particularly near the river mouth, which is an active breeding ground for sea birds. Holiday Accommodation in Hartenbos includes: Bed & Breakfasts, Guest Houses, Guest Lodges, Self Catering Apartments and camping facilities.
