The town with its scenic beauty and interesting sights offers a quiet, rustic atmosphere in an area that is still unexplored by many. Heidelberg is next to the N2 highway 276km from Cape Town and 168km from George. It is an historic country town in superb scenery with rivers, mountains and farm lands. With its population of 6415, Heidelberg lies in an attractive setting between the Langeberg mountains and the sea, on the banks of the Duivenhoks River. It is a small, tranquil town with friendly people. The Breede river mouth is at Witsand only about 35km from Heidelberg. Witsand offers excellent fishing and beautiful beaches. This is the whale nursery of Southern Africa and offers some of the best whale watching in the country. The Boosmansbos is a unique wilderness area in the Langeberg mountains close to Heidelberg. There are 64km of paths, and hikers may choose their own routes. Heidelberg is the ideal destination for the eco-tourist interested in birding, exploring fynbos, forests, mountains, rivers, streams and observing the fauna of the area.There is much to do. Hiking in pristine fynbos, unique horse riding trails, mountain biking, golf, squash, bowls, swimming and much more. The visitor can choose amongst a large number of accommodation facilities ranging from camping and caravan facilities, chalets, guest houses, bed & breakfast facilities and the towns historic hotel.
