The unforgettable Plettenberg Bay is truly the jewel of The Garden Route. Situated 210 kms from Port Elizabeth and +/- 600 km from Cape Town, the bay was originally christened “Bahia Formosa” , meaning Beautiful Bay, by early Portuguese explorers. It offers the visitor miles of sweeping golden beaches, the dramatic Robberg peninsula, intriguing lagoons and estuaries, indigenous forests and unpolluted rivers and sea.
A delicate flower-shaped sea shell called a pansy shell is endemic to this part of the coast, and is used as the symbol representing the town. Looking for these shells on the beach is a popular activity amongst visitors and locals alike. This area boasts fabulous trails for hikers, mountain bikers, horse riders and canoeists. Water sports include sailing in the safe waters of the Bay, superb rock and surf fishing and scuba diving.
Plettenberg Bay has a very rich marine life. Schools of playful dolphins can regularly be seen surfing the waves off the local beaches. Whale watching is a very popular attraction during the months July to December. There are boat-based tours available as well as marine safaris which provide a chance to see these gentle giants up close.
Besides the magnificent Indian Ocean, it offers the visitor more than 15 private and public nature reserves. The massive Robberg Nature Reserve is the perfect spot for whale and dolphin viewing, bird watching, hiking trails and exploring the Nelson Bay Cave. The Robberg is a must see for all visitors.
At night, it is alive with pubs, night-spots and fine restaurants. A wide range of accommodation offers luxury hotels, exclusive country retreats, cosy bed and breakfasts, self-catering chalets and excellent camping facilities .
With its exceptional climate and friendly atmosphere, it is the perfect destination for tourists interested in adventure, exploring, watching or just lazing.
