THE SHARK LAB - AQUARIUM
& RESEARCH FACILITY

Tel: +27 (0)44 690 5799

Website: www.shark-lab.co.za

Address: The Point, Mossel Bay

Email us: info@shark-lab.co.za

The Shark Lab, is operated in partnership with Oceans Aware (a division of Oceans - an organization dedicated to the exploration, discovery, understanding and conservation of marine life in South Africa whilst also providing facilities for visiting marine scientists from a variety of biological and oceanographic backgrounds), since 2008.

The Shark Lab operates as a duel purpose facility: to not only showcase sharks and marine animals endemic to South Africa (i.e. found no-where else in the world) to the public, but also to serve as a place to learn and study shark biology, behaviour and reproduction.

The Shark Lab aims to enlighten children and adults about the wonders of South Africa’s rich marine life. It operates as an intimate aquarium, where guests are welcomed and given personal tours of the lab by the Shark Lab's aquarists. Guests are also exposed to the great white shark research of Ryan Johnson, host of National Geographic's "The Secret Shark Pits" and "Sharkville" which were filmed locally, right here in Mossel Bay.

You will be lead through the facilities displays and learn about research experiments and their findings currently being conducted by the Oceans Research team. We typically have four to five different species of shark at the Shark Lab at any one time. We operate a catch and release policy for all our sharks, and once we have carried out research on the sharks they are tagged and returned to the wild. This allows for frequent changes in the inhabitants of the Shark Lab and there are always new friends to meet.

Not only are you able to meet and learn about our sharks, but we also offer you the opportunity to enter their watery world and swim in one of our displays, alongside real live sharks too, so that you can appreciate these magnificent creatures up close and personally.
