STILLBAAI
Stillbaai on the Garden Route lies almost 400 kilometers east of Cape Town, 26 kilometers off the N2 highway, at the mouth of the Goukou River.It is an ideal holiday destination offering wide unspoilt beaches, perfect swimming conditions, boating, fishing and watersports. Apart from the scenic beauty and the rhythm of the waves, the coast provides ideal conditions for anglers. This town has captivated visitors, which fall in love with the unspoilt majestic nature which is complemented by a local community that is friendly and lives in harmony. The weather is ideal for holiday makers with a moderate temperature all year around and beautiful sunshine-filled days. Temperatures fluctuate between 20 degrees C and 28 degrees C on average in summer and between 12 degrees C and 20 degrees C in winter. The vegetation is dominated by coastal fynbos with a great variety of species, including wild olives and numerous proteas. It lies on the “Cape Whale Route” and in whale season (which extends from approximately July to November each year) you can almost always observe whale mothers playing with their calves. Whale watching is a must and the dedicated whale watching view point above the harbour is an excellent viewing point. Neighbouring Melkhoutfontein is a small fishing village known for its local arts and crafts which can be purchased at the local craft shop. Jongensfontein, a coastal village, is 10 km along the coast and offers a spectacular view of the ocean. The modern village of Stillbaai was established in 1894 and it was used more for holiday purposes than for permanent residence. Between 1930 and 1955 a pontoon ferried vehicles across the river and in 1955 a bridge was eventually built. Various accommodation options are available from guest houses, B&B and self catering.
