TSITSIKAMMA

Tsitsikamma, known as “The Garden of the Garden Route”, welcomes you to an area the ancient San people called the “place of many waters.” It takes you on a journey from rocky shores to high forests. The deep gorges and rugged coastline, indigenous forest and an abundance of fynbos will truly take your breath away . Tsitsikamma National Park is situated some 615 km from Cape Town, 195 km from Port Elizabeth and 68 km from Plettenberg Bay. This area lies between the sea and the Tsitsikamma Mountains and stretches from the Bloukrans River in the West to Clarkson in the East.

The Tsitsikamma National Park is South Africa’s oldest and largest marine reserve, where the coastline, fynbos and forests are protected. The area of the park stretches some 5 km to sea, protecting a wonderland of inter-tidal life, reef and deep-sea fish. Dolphins frolic in the waves and the Southern Right whale comes here to breed.

It offers loads of adventure opportunities for everyone. A diverse range of activities are available. Visitors can book a guide to accompany them and discover more about the history and ecology of the area. Recreational activities and adventures include the Otter Trail, The Dolphin trail, Abseiling, Scuba- diving, hiking along the rugged coast, snorkelling, boat rides and canoeing.

Accommodation in and around the park includes cottages, chalets, oceanettes, forest huts and camping sites. Several Guest Houses and Bed & Breakfast establishments are also available in and around the area. At Stormsriver mouth there is a shop where souvenirs and basic commodities may be purchased, a la carte restaurant, also serving light refreshments, and a laundromat.

Stormsriver Village lies 4 km West of Stormsriver Bridge. The village is sign posted off the national road. Storms River Village stemmed from a shooting box built by TH Duthie in 1841, then developed into a construction camp for the builders and was declared a crown village in 1885. It offers a couple of small shops; postal agency, liquor store, police station, curio shop, various restaurants and a choice of accommodation options.
